Television Broadcasting

Television Broadcasting classes are taught by Todd Rubin . In these classes students learn almost everything they need to know about Television Broadcasting. Projects are usually assigned to students; however creative ideas for other projects are more than welcome. Students can work on any projects that they wish as long as they are approved by the instructor. Creativity is welcome.

Students in television classes are taught the following skills:

- Working Cameras: Students learn all the functions of a professional camcorder. Whether it is MiniDV, or S-VHS. Students learn how to white set, black set, manual focus, use irisís, use shutter features and much more. They also learn the basic movements of a camera such as how to pan and tilt a studio camera.

- Editing: Students will also learn how to use various editors. They will learn how to edit deck to deck or in a linear fashion using out cuts-only editors and our more advanced ones. Students will also learn how to edit on non-linear (computer) systems. They will master skills in such programs as Speed Razor, Adobe Premier, and Inscriber (graphic/textual editing). All students in the course will have to edit all projects and keep them appropriate for television broadcasts.

- 3D Animation: If students wish they may learn how to use 3D Studio Max. 3D Studio Max is a graphic animator that focuses more on animation of objects. Students using this program learn how to create a virtual human and animate motion on it. This program is used to make many of the station ids seen on the television station now. This program is usually self-taught by the students and takes lots of time to learn.

- Interviewing: Students learn the skills necessary to conduct a professional interview. They learn how to open and close and more importantly what questions to ask. Interviews are sometimes shown in a serious fashion and sometimes are more comical.

Besides the information listed above, students learn the basics of the function of a television set, and how VHS and MiniDV tapes work. Students put lots of hours into the class outside of class time working on production work and filming many events around the school that are presented over GBN's cable channel. Television classes do require all students to work on filming outside of class time!
